n 1901 Mackintosh entered an international competition for the design of a House for an Art Lover, ‘Haus eines Kunstfreundes’, intended as ‘a grand house in a thoroughly modern style’. Although Mackintosh’s entry was disqualified owing to failure in submitting the required number of interior perspectives, the judges praised his work for its ‘distinctive colouring, impressive design and cohesiveness of inner and outer construction’. They awarded him a special prize of 600 marks.

Mackintosh showed confidence in his plan of ‘Haus eines Kunstfreundes’. Within the competition brief the Mackintoshes were able to enjoy freedom of artistic expression, working together throughout. There is distinctive evidence of Margaret’s work and influence in the design of the exquisite Music Room with its elaborate fusion of ‘male’ and ‘female’ shapes in the curvilinear female forms and the bold, male, upright structures. Such symbolism is used throughout the house, particularly the rose motif.
